Overview

Avolon wanted to create a memorable and sustainable gift for attendees of its Aviation School 2024. The gift needed to be practical, distinctive and aligned with the company’s sustainability goals. The starting material was especially relevant to the organisation: retired leather from an aircraft Avolon had refurbished.

Challenge

Avolon needed a useful corporate gift with a credible connection to aviation and sustainability. The existing aircraft leather carried that story, but it required careful material assessment, creative design and specialist craftsmanship to give it a professional second life within a tight event timeline.

Solution

Mamukko proposed transforming the retired aircraft seat leather into handcrafted laptop cases. Working closely with Avolon, we developed a practical design that retained the character and provenance of the original material while delivering the durability and finish expected of a corporate gift.

The cases were made in our Kinsale workshop, combining circular-design thinking, material knowledge and small-batch Irish manufacturing.

Outcome

The finished laptop cases became meaningful gifts for Aviation School attendees. Each case demonstrated what can happen when an organisation treats an existing material as a design opportunity rather than waste—giving aircraft leather a valuable and useful new purpose.
