Golden Light Moments –
beyond the race, the ocean and time.
Perhaps our most aesthetic purse, aided by its colours of gold, purple or red Spinnaker ribbon is perfect to hold many small escapee items. It’s suprise bright orange interior lining pads the harder outer sail. We relate it, the day it goes on line, to inspirational moments that happened the night before, on the around the world race, The Vendee Globe. Details below. Mamukko upcycle sails from the IMOCA 60, solo, non-stop, and without assistance, Vendee Globe race. This is NOT one of the sails, but inspired by the race. This year, has been riveting. Alex Thomson having to abandon his yacht and more recently, 1st December, 2020, Kevin Escoffie (PRB) escaped in survival suit to his liferaft in the middle of the ocean, SW of the Cape of Good Hope. Hope was on the way in the form of Jean Le Cam, (Yes We Cam!) himself, a previous rescuee on an earlier race. Jean took this chance to find Kevin, following his distressed signals during the night. After 6 tacks to and fro, searching in the dark, he spotted a little light, a reflection, and describes the moment, as a real moment that moment, he really knew it was Kevin!
We are only gasping with admiration for these solos sailers, thriving in the most adverse weather conditions against all odds. But most of all the admiration has to go to those, including three other skippers that left the race in order to find their comrade sailor. Congratulations to all involved winning the real race, to capture real golden moments that live beyond the race, the ocean and time.
Our little purse;- it’s zigzagging lines remind us of Jean’s tacking, a term used in sailing and sewing, in search of Kevin. The purses inner is lined with bright emergency life vest, we know it is the same colour as Kevin’s survival suit. The gold fibre strands running across the purse, invoke the vein that gold diggers and rescuers must follow, invisible and based on faith and determination. The intersections;- the possible chances of finding that gold, in this case that were successful.
